Karen Asfeldt

Equipping Ministry Assistant

Karen Asfeldt was born in Papua New Guinea and, following her parent’s missionary service there, grew up on a fourth-generation family farm in rural northeast South Dakota.

Karen’s personal commitment to follow Christ took place at Pickerel Lake Bible Camp at the age of 12. After completing high school in Webster, SD, she majored in Family and Consumer Science and Communication Studies at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. During this time she traveled and sang with a Christian Outreach Team, directed the Big Brother / Big Sister Program, served on the Homecoming Committee and wrote for the school newspaper. It was here that she met her husband, Thomas. The Asfeldts will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June of 2014.

She and Thomas have a son, Kristian, who is a student at the University of South Dakota and a daughter, Hannah, who is a student at the University of Oklahoma.

Karen has had a life-long interest in volunteerism and regularly used her gifts of communication, organizational skill and creativity by serving with Bible Study Fellowship, in the public school system and as a host-parent for exchange students. Her first exposure to Equipping Ministry came in the early 1990s while she was working as the Director of Marketing for the Volunteer and Information Center (now Helpline Center). From 1993-1998 Karen was employed as the Director of Development at the Family Practice Center - now known as the Center for Family Medicine - where she was instrumental in the organization’s name-change process. Karen also worked in education and volunteer coordination at her children’s neighborhood school, Southwest Elementary, while living in Durham, NC, from 2001-2005.

In addition to providing direct administrative assistance to ministry leaders, Karen is passionate about investing in our equipping ministry through team development, training, project management and helping people discover their gifts. Her role at Living Word makes ministry possible, profitable and joyful for numerous others.
