Preparing for Corporate Worship - 11-11-18

Written By Ryan Egan on 11/08/2018 | Posted in Congregational LifeWorship

We continue our 'Give Thanks' series, this time giving thanks for fellow Christians as we look at Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 8.

Remember that you can head to our music resource page to listen to and learn the music for Sunday.

With these things in mind I will lead you through a preview of this coming Sunday's service.

Call to Worship

Oh Shout For Joy

Last week we introduced 'Oh Shout for Joy' before the service as our call to worship. In the previous week's post I mentioned that it would be sure to get people's toes tapping, and it did, as people ended up bursting into applause after the song was ended! We haven't had that happen for a while and it was a fun and joyful moment in the service. We'll be singing this again this week. While we won't have the lively fiddle the song is still great and I encourage you to use it as a great place of joy and celebration as you enter into our time of worship.

Songs of Praise

For The Beauty of the Earth

I've sung this great hymn for years and years. Strangely, though, I've never centered in on one particular verse. It's interesting to me how, when planning music for worship, that songs take on new life when they are planned with new themes in mind. This week we will be thanking God for fellow Christians and I really love how much one of the verses of this common Thanksgiving hymns fits the theme:

For the joy of human love: brother, sister, parent, child.
Friends on earth and friends above; for all gentle thoughts and mild.

I've always viewed this verse as just a nice sentiment, but this week I'm thinking specifically of my church family and other special Christians in my life. I hope you do the same!

My Heart Is Filled

This beautiful modern thanksgiving hymn points us to true reasons to give thanks. "To Him..." is a phrase used often in the song, which is fantastic, as so often we 'give thanks' without making sure we acknowledge the Giver!

Confession of Sin

Most Merciful God

Again, this week, we will use music to bring our confession before God. It's a great way to help shift our minds and make the confession time fresh.

Assurance of Pardon

Don't miss this crucial moment in the service - where God's word is proclaimed over us in celebration. We will also respond by singing the second verse and chorus to the wonderful hymn "My Savior's Love." Indeed, how marvelous and how wonderful is my Savior's love for me!

Confession of Faith

This week will proclaim Joshua 1:8-9 together. This passage is our memory verse for the month.

Greeting and Announcements

It's always wonderful to see how the body of Christ is putting the idea of "serving the living God" into action.

Missionary Moment

This week we will look at a video from Voice of the Martyrs as we acknowledge the international day of prayer for the persecuted church (this Sunday was last Sunday but because of a full confirmation Sunday last week we will observe the day this coming Sunday). Feel free to watch the video below as well.

Tithes and Offerings

Always be sure to treat this as a time of worship as we give back a portion of what God has given us.

Scripture Readings

This week's readings are Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and Philippians 1:1-11.

Message

As mentioned above, Pastor Kirk will preach from 2 Corinthians 8 where Paul gives thanks for specific fellow believers and how much of a blessing they were to him.

Sending

We've been singing the song "Oh How Good It Is" for several years at Living Word. I keep thinking it might be time to retire it but after much prayer and planning for the service realized that it is the perfect fit for this message and this time. Along with last week's 'Let It Be Said Of Us' this song takes the concepts of Colossians 3 and Romans 12 and puts them into a simple summary. I pray that the words of this song don't just pass you by. Sing them as a fervent prayer and embrace them this week.

We, of course, will be sent with a 'good word' or benediction as we go into a new week.

Blessings for Obedience

26:1 “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. 2 You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.

3 “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and…
