Preparing for Corporate Worship - 7/30/17

Written By Ryan Egan on 07/27/2017 | Posted in Congregational LifeWorship

As we near Sunday it's always good for us to get our hearts and minds ready before we gather for corporate worship. That way, if your Sunday morning getting ready for church is hectic, or if you don't find time to pray and prepare before the service you can know that you're not heading into church without any reflection or preparation. Let's take a look at this week's service:

Call To Worship

We will start this week's service with Philippians 4:4-8, a reminder to: rejoice, be reasonable, request to God with prayer and supplication, and remember to dwell on things that are worthy of dwelling on. It's been a while since we've read this text publically in our congregation and I believe it's a reminder worth hearing.

Songs of Praise

We will be singing "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" and "All the Earth" as we begin the service. Both of these songs are calls to worship and praise God for who He is, what He's done, and at the beginning and end of each day.

Confession of Sin and Assurance of Forgiveness

We will have a time of silent confession this week, allowing us to confess the many times when we have failed to think about "honorable...just...pure...lovely...commendable..." things and things "worthy of excellence" and "worthy of praise."

Following the Assurance of Forgiveness we will have the opportunity to continue in the attitude of gratefulness and thankfulness, proclaiming together "How marvelous! How wonderful is my Savior's love for me."

Confession of Faith

From there, we will proclaim together Psalm 111, a Psalm declaring the words of the Lord and how wondrous they are. This confession serves as a reminder to us to think on the things that Paul urged us to think about in the passage that began our service, especially those things of God's character and what He's done.

Announcements and Tithes and Offerings

We will then have the opportunity to worship by learning how to serve and encourage one another and our community in our announcements as well as the opportunity to worship by giving God back what He has given us during the Tithes and Offerings portion of the service.

Scripture Readings

God's Word will be publicly read and proclaimed as we do every Sunday. Our readings for this Sunday continue the theme of God's provision over the earth and His works in creating it and providing all within it as a gift to His people.

Message

This week we take a look at Psalm 65, a Psalm of praise. It is our prayer that by this point in the service we have been able to narrow our focus - this week on the provision of God - and continue to have God's word work within us through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We will respond and be sent by singing together "Receive the Glory," a wonderful song of thankfulness by Bob Kauflin. The lyrics urge us that everything we have done has been provided by God's hand and that He should receive all the glory and praise, helping us shift our focus again away from us and back to Him.

Listen to and Learn the Music for Sunday

We have resumed our practice of posting recordings of the music for the worship service each week so that you can listen to and learn the music for Sunday as well as come back to it throughout the following week in your own personal times of worship. You can head to our music resource page to find each song.

On a side note, I think his new album encapsulates all that is so incredibly awful about divorce, but more so, about our sinful condition.
