Preparing For Corporate Worship - Jesus, Thank You

Written By Ryan Egan on 10/31/2014 | Posted in Congregational LifeWorship

This Sunday begins a very bittersweet time for us at Living Word. While we begin the final countdown to Pastor Wade's time with us, we also begin a time of intentional and intense thanks for what God has done in and through both Pastor Wade and our congregation over the last several years.

All Other Things Can't Compare To God's Love

The one thing, though, that makes all of the memories and ministry fade away in comparison is what we will be celebrating this first Sunday of the "Thanks Be To Our God" series: God's boundless love for us.

Not only does God love us with an everlasting love, but He loves us so much, that even though we were still sinners, He sent His only begotten son to die in our place, taking the burden of our sin upon Him.

To that end, we will be singing some very specific songs of thanks. While it's great to "give thanks" in general, it's much more profitable to give thanks for something specific, and even more so to someONE specific. That is one major separator for us as Christians; we view God as the "giver of all good gifts" and ultimately give back the work of our hands to Him. So we will be giving thanks for some specific things:

  • God's love
  • Our rescue from sin
  • To Jesus as the one who bore that sin
  • For God's sacrifice of His son
  • Other similar concepts

Songs Familiar at Living Word

While we have sung "Jesus, Thank You" and "How Deep The Father's Love For Us" many times at Living Word, I would urge you to not let yourself "go through the motions" as you sing them or let yourself think, "Oh, that song again...?" Instead, let these rich words pierce your heart and mind and drive you to worship in thankfulness:

Your blood has washed away my sin, Jesus, thank You. The Father's wrath, completely satisfied, Jesus, thank You. Once Your enemy, now seated at Your table, Jesus, thank You!
Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace, Your mercy and Your kindness know no end!
How deep the Father's love for us, how vast beyond all measure, that He should give His only son, and make a wretch His treasure.
It was my sin that held Him there, until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But, this I know with all my heart: His wounds have paid my ransom.

Before You I Kneel

While we want to focus on our thanks for God's love this Sunday, we also want to be able to declare throughout the Thanksgiving season that God is the giver of everything we have and enjoy and that it is right to offer those things back to Him for His glory. To that end, you will be hearing "Before You I Kneel" during the offering this Sunday with the intention that we will sing it as a congregation throughout November. Use it as a reminder that:

"This is the day You've given Your servant, I will rejoice and be glad
for the strength I have to live and breathe,
for each skill Your grace has given me,
for the needs and opportunities that will glorify Your great name."
