What We Really Need

As a kid, I always remember putting together a Christmas wish list for gifts that I absolutely needed. The list usually included video games, hooded sweatshirts, college t-shirts and basketball shoes - necessities for any sports crazed junior high and high school athlete. As a parent, I have a bit of a harder time of thinking what I need to receive as gift from family and friends at Christmas.

As an adult, I have become self-sufficient and can purchase those items I need. Perhaps you can empathize with me. The apostle Paul writes "thanks be to God for his indescribable gift" (2 Corinthians 9:15). As self sufficient as I view myself, I stand in need of certain things that I cannot provide for myself.

I am in need of grace, forgiveness and love. I need the hope, promise and comfort of heaven. And each Christmas I am reminded that these are things that I cannot provide for myself and can only come to me through Jesus. He is the "gift" that we celebrate today and everyday. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Rejoicing with you in God's great gift,
Pastor Kirk
