Face to Face with Elizabeth and Mary

Living Word Free Lutheran Church's women's ministry, Women of the Word (WoW), kicked off a six-week “Face-to-Face with Elizabeth and Mary” mentoring study by Janet Thompson for sixteen women in all ages and stages of life this past weekend. The women were matched by age, spiritual maturity, and also strategy (we had a few special circumstances).

The women signed up for this pilot mentoring study of WoW stated they were feeling nervous, inadequate, and unsure of what they got themselves signed up for. But, there was an overwhelming feeling of excitement throughout the women to both dive deeper into God’s Word and to form relationships with other women within the church.

After some orientation and training of what mentoring is; debunking generational myths; and helpful hints, the women were matched. As the WoW team matched these women up it was through much prayer and God’s leading that the matches were made. The ladies had their first “get together” after the matches and discussed their “first date,” what they were desiring in a mentoring relationship, and goals for their mentoring relationship.

"Mentoring is nothing more than..."

I know that I, personally, am desiring a deeper, intimate friendship, practical advice from life experiences, encouragement, and honesty, all while bringing the glory to God through what I share and learn. One of my favorite lines from the book, so far, is “Mentoring is nothing more than sharing with another woman those 'been-there-done-that' experiences in life, where God helped you through, and He will help her too!”

With this all being said, I would ask you all to be in prayer for the ladies involved in this study. Especially for the nervousness and inadequacies felt in the beginning to be quenched as God works through these women, for honesty and openness for those that have a difficult time being transparent and letting others into their hearts, and finally, for God to be glorified in all shared between these sets of women.

Psalm 71:18, “So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.”
