As Jesus came into Jerusalem on the Sunday before Passover the crowds went before Him shouting "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord" (Matthew 21:9). The crowds were shouting and singing Psalm 118, which is one of the Passover hymns.

As the crowds shouted "Hosanna" which means save us now, it is unlikely that they understood the full significance of those words. The crowd and even the disciples did not grasp the true nature of the kingdom of God or what events would occur in the days to come. In Psalm 118 God points us to the Messiah and the fulfillment of these prophecies in Holy Week.
